POTTING

Phalaenopsis should be potted in a well drained potting material. We plant small plants up to 4 inch pots, be in 1/8th to 1/4 inch fir bark, larger plants up to 8 inch pots in 1/4 to 1/2 inch fir bark. Repoting every year is very beneficial to good root formation.

WATERING
Watering should vary according to the season, weather and local humidity. However it usually ranges from once to twice weekly. Misting is not recommended as method to raise humidity. Misting will eventually cause bacterial rot disease of crowns or leaves of plant. If humidity is less than 40-60%, place plant on pebble tray with water, or place in kitchen or bathroom area. Add orchid fertilizer at rate of 1/2 strength each watering.

FERTILIZING
Although other methods will work, the best results require an orchid fertilizer which contains 60% nitrates & all trace minerals. Look for a 20-10-20 (GROWMORE) which does not contain urea. Fertilize half strength with each watering, year round. Switching from high nitrogen to high phosphorus will not give as good results as previously believed. No need to switch! The plant will take what it needs when it needs it. You can order GROWMORE FROM G & B ORCHIDS.

LIGHT & LOCATION

Phalaenopsis have become the most popular of all orchids grown. It is easy to see why, since they will stay in flower for over a half year, grow in very little light, and enjoy usual household temperatures. They do not require very bright light to be happy. Light from window as far away as six feet will do. Any window except the north window works best. Lighting similar to that which grows African violets is all they need. Plant lights (12 hours) can be used when extra light is required, or when grown where no natural sunlight exists. A temperature above 63 degrees F. and up to 95 degrees F. is desirable. A brief period of 14 nights in the fall to expose plant to 50-55 degree F. and warm days in the house will initiate flower spikes in the late fall, or winter. The rest of the time plants must be kept at warm temperatures.
